This extraordinary belt buckle has been exquisitely crafted by well known Navajo / Apache silversmith Gibson Nez. Gibson is known for his expert silverwork which often shows rays surrounding a gem quality turquoise stone. Gibson says, I simply try to make a piece that highlights the stone.
And, indeed this piece certainly does. The slightly curved and beautifully shaped buckle is made of thick sterling silver and measures 3 1/8" across and 2 1/4" wide. The precisely crafted long thin silver bezel which holds the stone seems to be an extension of the rays surrounding the stone. It weighs 83.5 grams or just under 3 ounces. It is signed with Gibson's CzN hallmark and marked Navajo and Sterling.
The silver loop at the back will fit a belt up to 1 1/4 wide. The turquoise stone is in excellent condition. The silverwork shows light scratches and signs of vintage wear.
Overall this buckle is in great vintage condition. Gibson Nez is known by collectors worldwide as a master of stampwork. He passed on in 2007 and was a member of the Jicarilla Apache and Navajo nations. Many believe that no other craftsman has come close to the expert precision of Nez's sharp, clean, and impossibly close stamps. Parallel lines encircle bolos and bracelets like radiant energy, drawing your eye to the extraordinary, gem-grade stones Gibson hand-picks to feature in the center. Gibson's pieces have won ribbons and awards at all the major competitions, including Gallup Ceremonial, Santa Fe Indian Market, the Heard Museum, the All Mankind Jewelry Competition in Washington, D. And Casa Grande in Arizona. We guarantee all of our Native American Indian items to be AUTHENTIC American Indian traditional arts.
